Pucker up! – Lip flip vs Lip filler

By Karie Jones, Front Desk Coordinator

So you’re curious about getting your lips treated to either create a more youthful appearance or to add an extra wow factor. There are a couple different ways to go about giving you that new look! A lip flip is done by injecting Botox around the upper lip and lip filler is when a Juvaderm or another hyaluronic acid is injected into the lip tissue.

The best way to know what is right for you is to schedule a complimentary consultation where one of our certified providers can walk you through the process and ensure you are comfortable with what you decide to move forward with.

In the meantime, this article may help to answer some of your initial questions.

Lip Filler:

Our Juvaderm fillers are a gel-like substance made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occuring substance found in your body. This means that overtime, your body will naturally metabolize the ingredient and the treatment will last 6-18 months depending on your own metabolism.

Filler can be injected to help hydrate the lips by filling in lines and wrinkles as well as adding more volume to the lips. This has been increasingly popular to create a more youthful appearance and add back in any volume loss as well as create a more desired shape.

Prior to being injected, we always use a medical grade, highly concentrated numbing cream to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Juvaderm filler also contains lidocaine which will continue to numb as it is injected into the lips.

After the injection, you will see an immediate result with little to no downtime. Swelling is normal and will subside within a couple of days but keep in mind there is always the risk of bruising.

Juvaderm fillers can also be injected into other areas of the face such as around the mouth to treat wrinkles, the cheeks to increase shape and bone structure, as well as a more defined jaw.

Lip Flip:

A lip flip is done by injecting just a few units of Botox into the muscle above your lips. Botox works by blocking the acetylcholine release from the nerves that cause the muscle to contract and move. When we do this above the lip, it’s intended to relax the muscle that can help create a more defined cupid’s bow or “m” shape.

This option is great for someone who wants a more defined look but not necessarily more volume as it won’t increase the size of the lips. Also, this is great for someone looking for something subtle or just starting out with injectable treatments.

The other difference with a lip flip is the Botox typically only lasts 3-4 months compared to the filler which will last up to 9 or more months.
