The Signs of Low Testosterone in Women

Might you have signs of low testosterone? Most people are familiar with testosterone but many think that it is primarily a male hormone. Yes, men have more testosterone than women, but it is very important in women as well.

In women testosterone is produced primarily by the ovaries, but some is produced by the adrenal glands. Between the age of 20 to 40 women lose about 50% of their testosterone production and after menopause when the ovaries no longer produce hormones, the testosterone levels fall even more sharply.

The signs of low testosterone in women may include:

  • Brain fog loss of memory, focus, and concentration
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Decreased libido
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Night sweats
  • Joint pain and muscle aches
  • Weight gain, especially around the middle

What can I do if I have some or all of these symptoms?

If you are suffering from these symptoms, you may have low testosterone or other imbalances in your hormones. I recommend getting you labs done and looked at by a functional medicine practitioner or a provider of bioidentical hormones such as BioTE. Our office provides BioTE if you are looking for a provider.

Currently the western medical system looks at labs and if the numbers match the currently designated norms then you are told that your labs are fine. In many instances these “normal levels” were determined years ago by looking at many hospitalized patients. Most people who are in the hospital are not optimally healthy or they would not be there.

Functional medicine looks at labs differently. They look at how you feel and your symptoms, and how your labs compare to an optimally healthy person. Your lab values may be “normal” according to the lab, but not optimal. In this case, treatment can be administered or prescribed to get you to the optimal range and help you feel better.

The benefits of bioidentical testosterone supplementations are many and include:

Improved:

  • Energy
  • Memory, focus, and concentration
  • Anxiety
  • Mood
  • Sleep
  • Libido
  • Bone mineral density and muscle mass
  •   Muscle aches and joint pain

Decreased:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Night sweats
  • Weight gain and fat deposition around the middle
  • Level of cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Risk of Alzheimer’s disease

The signs of low testosterone in women can be many and if you are suffering from them, having your labs checked may be the first step in getting your life and your self back. At our office, we only charge $150 to have a full lab panel run (that normally costs about $1200). This includes the cost of the blood draw and a consultation with one of our providers. If your hormone levels are not optimal, this could be contributing to your symptoms and bioidentical hormone replacement could help.
